In March 2022, the 25-year-old model was having breakfast with her husband Justin Bieber when she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her arm. Her husband asked her if she was okay and she could not answer. She said, ā€œI couldn’t speak.ā€ The right side of my face started drooping, I was not able to speak even a sentence.
He was taken to the hospital, however, by then his symptoms had subsided. The results of his tests revealed that he had a small blood clot in his brain, which resolved on its own. It is also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
She also revealed that she underwent additional testing and doctors found that ā€œI have a grade 5 PFO (patent foramen ovale), which is the highest grade you can get.ā€ ā€œMine was quite big.ā€
He added, ā€œMy blood clot came out through the flap or hole in my heart and traveled to my brain, and that’s what caused me to have a TIA.ā€ He underwent successful surgery to close the PFO.

What is a mini stroke or transient ischemic attack?

TIA is a short period of symptoms similar to stroke. This occurs due to a slight obstruction in the blood flow to the brain. TIA usually lasts only a few minutes and does not cause long-term harm. The Mayo Clinic says that about 1 in 3 people who suffer a TIA will eventually have a stroke, with about half occurring within a year of the TIA.
A mini-stroke can serve as both a warning of a future stroke and an opportunity to prevent it.

Symptoms of transient ischemic attack

TIA symptoms usually last for a few minutes. Most of these symptoms disappear within an hour. The symptoms of TIA are similar to those found at the beginning of a stroke. Here, take a look at some of the symptoms of TIA, according to the Mayo Clinic.
  • Weakness, numbness, or paralysis in the face, arm, or leg, usually on one side of the body
  • slurred speech or trouble understanding others
  • Blindness or double vision in one or both eyes

You may have more than one TIA. Their symptoms may be similar or different depending on which area of ​​the brain is involved.

Risk factors for transient ischemic attack

There are a variety of risk factors that can increase the chance of a TIA and these include risk factors you cannot change and risk factors you can control.
