If you are a person who enjoys a glass of alcohol or cocktail after the movement of boarding and squeeze your body in a compact space, then you want to rethink. A study has recently revealed that there are several risks of consuming alcohol on an airplane – especially on long flights.
After a series of laboratory experiments, it was found that when people fall asleep after consuming alcohol under low air pressure, blood oxygen levels can fall dangerously. In fact, it can also increase your heart rate.
Talking to the media, Dr., a researcher at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Aerospace Medicine in Colon, Germany. Eva-Maria Elmenhorst stated that this study examined the effects of height and alcohol.
Low blood oxygen levels and increased heart rate can cause stress on the cardiovascular system as the heart has to work even more to compensate for a decline in oxygen. If you are young and healthy, then this type of stress on your heart may make you feel a bit tired. However, if you have a heart or respiratory conditions like heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or sleep apnea, it can make you lighthead and shortage of breath.
In addition, alcohol is dehydration – increasing the risk of developing a clot in your feet or lungs.
German scientists, after their studies, revealed that they hoped that alcohol consumption would have an impact on the people under low air pressure, but “We were surprised to see that the effect was so strong.”
As a part of the study, a total of 12 people in each group slept for four hours after consuming two cans of beer or two glasses of liquor. On the other hand, 12 slept without consuming alcohol. After two days of breaks, the process reversed. Those who had consumed alcohol before sleeping, now they slept without alcohol and vice versa.
It was then observed that those who drank before sleeping in the height room, their blood oxygen saturation was dropped by 85%. His heart rate was an average of about 88 beats per minute. Before sleeping, their blood oxygen saturation was dropped by 95% for those consuming alcohol at sea level and the heart rate increased to 77 beats per minute.
So what do you do on your next flight? A drink is probably fine. However, it is important to note how you feel after that. If you wake up with a headache, avoid it strictly.
