Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have developed an affordable device to diagnose and manage tinnitus, often described as a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears.

This innovative solution could improve the quality of life of millions of people affected by this often debilitating condition.

Tinnitus is the sensation of sound in the absence of any external noise, meaning only the affected person can hear it. According to data published in JAMA Neurology in 2022, tinnitus affects more than 740 million adults worldwide, with more than 120 million experiencing severe symptoms.

These symptoms can include sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, irritability, and significant effects on mental health and social life.

More information about the device

The newly developed device, with its supporting application software, provides a comprehensive approach to the management of tinnitus. It has the Precise Tinnitus Matching feature, which helps in identifying the exact nature and frequency of the sound experienced by the patient.

It offers a customizable, multimodal approach to treatment, ensuring that each patient receives a tailored experience suited to their unique situation. The software also includes tools for tracking disease progression, enabling physicians to monitor a patient’s improvement over time.

The primary goal of the project is to empower doctors with accurate diagnostic tools while making treatment more accessible and cost-effective.

The affordability of the device is a significant breakthrough, as tinnitus management solutions are often expensive and not widely available, especially in low-income areas.

The project has received funding from Tata Center for Technology and Design (TCTD), IIT Bombay and Wadhwani Research Center for Bioengineering (WRCB).

This device not only represents technological advancement but also brings hope to millions of people suffering from tinnitus around the world. By offering accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment, IIT Bombay’s innovation can significantly reduce the burden of tinnitus and improve the overall well-being of affected individuals.
