International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Advancing access and inclusion for all
One in six people worldwide face disability-related challenges, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive health care, accessible infrastructure and equal opportunities for all abilities.

An estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide have a substantial disability, which is 16 percent of the global population – one in every six people. Health disparities among persons with disabilities
According to Dr. Chaudhary, studies show that people with disabilities may face lower life expectancy – up to 20 years less than people without disabilities – due to limited access to health care, social support, and economic opportunities. These disparities underscore the urgent need for inclusive health care systems that bridge the gap for individuals with disabilities.

Dr Chaudhary says it is very important to design spaces and services with accessibility in mind. “Accessible infrastructure doesn’t just meet the needs of people with disabilities – it benefits society as a whole by promoting inclusivity and equality. “Every sector, from schools and workplaces to public spaces, must accommodate diverse abilities.”

Dr Chaudhary concluded, “This day encourages society to consider how we can create a barrier-free world, ensuring every person has access to health, education and participation.”
