An estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide have a substantial disability, which is 16 percent of the global population – one in every six people. This shocking number emphasizes the importance of addressing the challenges faced by people with disabilities and ensuring that their perspectives are included in all aspects of society.

We spoke to Dr. Ashish Chaudhary, Managing Director, Aakash Health careNew Delhi, on the urgent need to promote inclusive health care, access and equity for persons with disabilities.
Health disparities among persons with disabilities
According to Dr. Chaudhary, studies show that people with disabilities may face lower life expectancy – up to 20 years less than people without disabilities – due to limited access to health care, social support, and economic opportunities. These disparities underscore the urgent need for inclusive health care systems that bridge the gap for individuals with disabilities.

Accessibility is key
About 18 percent of the population is living with some form of disability, this percentage increases with age. Dr Chaudhary says it is very important to design spaces and services with accessibility in mind. “Accessible infrastructure doesn’t just meet the needs of people with disabilities – it benefits society as a whole by promoting inclusivity and equality. “Every sector, from schools and workplaces to public spaces, must accommodate diverse abilities.”
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on 3 December, reminds us of the need for inclusivity and equal opportunities for all. Dr Chaudhary concluded, “This day encourages society to consider how we can create a barrier-free world, ensuring every person has access to health, education and participation.”
