Cheese. It’s creamy, sticky, and extremely versatile, making it a favorite of many. Be it on top of pizza or in sandwiches, its rich flavor and texture has earned it a place in kitchens around the world. In India, the cheese aisle is filled with options – from soft paneer to sharp cheddar – for every taste. But beyond its melt-in-the-mouth qualities, cheese is packed with protein, making it a must-have for anyone after a nutritious ingredient. But can cheese alone meet your daily protein requirement? Can you rely on it for a balanced diet? Let’s discover it.

Is cottage cheese enough for your everyday protein requirements?

Short answer: no. Although cheese contains some protein, there is still a problem. Nutritionist Amita Gadre explains that despite the protein content, cheese is not your ultimate protein source, mainly because of its high levels of fat and sodium. Take Parmesan for example. It may contain 38 grams of protein per 100 grams, but it also contains 29 grams of fat. And the low-fat cottage cheese also has 20 grams of protein, but also 22 grams of fat.

So, is cheese taboo?

Definitely not! According to nutritionist Amita Gadre, cheese can still be a part of your diet, but moderation is important. The trick is to choose the right type. And stay away from processed cheese. Ayurvedic health instructor Dimple Jangra explains why:

1. Long shelf life

Processed cheese is rich in preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial colors. In fact, leave a piece in your fridge for six months, and it will still look the same. This is a clear indication of how chemical-heavy it is.

2. Packed with sodium

A slice of processed cheese can contain nearly 400 milligrams of sodium. It may contribute to high blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease.

3. Devoid of nutrients

Processed cheese loses many of its nutrients, especially calcium. Instead, you’re left with preservatives, additives, and unhealthy fats.

If you still want to enjoy cheese, choose home-made or fresh cheese that doesn’t last forever.

What’s the best way to eat cheese?

Eating cheese alone may seem okay, but it is not the healthiest option. Gadre recommends combining cottage cheese with fiber-rich foods like vegetables and whole grains to make it a more balanced meal. And to ensure that your body gets enough protein, don’t rely only on cheese. Include chicken, fish, lentils, eggs or tofu in your regular meals.
