Is it possible to have three breasts? The doctor says yes!
Although it may not be common, many women around the world want to have three breasts – also known as polymastia. Doctors say that it is a surgical procedure where they use techniques like tissue expanders and insert balloon-like devices between two natural breasts. An implant is then placed to add the third breast. A few years ago, a popular YouTuber from America made headlines worldwide after getting implants. Also known as accessory breasts or polymastia, having three breasts is not a natural occurrence, but is possible through surgery. According to experts, the surgery, known as tissue expansion, helps form a new breast in the space between the other two breasts. “In such cases, a technique called tissue expander is used with a balloon-like device, which is inserted between the two breasts,” noted cosmetic surgeon Dr Mithun Panchal said on his Instagram channel.
According to Dr. Mithun, even though it is not a very popular cosmetic surgery, many women still undergo this procedure.
“Saline is injected into the space created for the third breast, and as the space is created, the area stretches the skin to the maximum. Then a breast implant is added there, creating a third breast,” he said.

The Florida-based YouTuber said that initially all the plastic surgery clinics were surprised by his request and they refused.
What is polymastia?
According to Science Direct, polymastia describes the presence of more than two breasts in a human being. It is synonymous with alveolar or accessory breast tissue which has the potential to undergo benign and malignant changes similar to normal pectoral breast tissue.
Experts say accessory axillary breast tissue is the most common type of polymastia, accounting for 60-70 percent of all ectopic breast tissue. Additionally, some other reported locations include the parasternal, subscapular, and vulvar regions.
