Abu Dhabi is transforming air travel with its new passport-free screening system. Zayed International Airport is at the forefront, introducing advanced biometric technology to make every part of your airport experience, from check-in to boarding, much easier and faster. By 2025, the airport plans to use facial recognition at all stages, eliminating the need for passports and boarding passes. Instead, a quick facial scan will confirm your identity in seconds.
Zayed International Airport begins using biometric screening in November 2023. In this first phase, they introduced automated check-in, self-service baggage drop-off, and facial recognition at key locations such as boarding gates and e-gates. This new system is set to replace traditional methods of checking your identity, making the process faster and easier.
Abu Dhabi Airport The new biometric Smart Travel project is being worked on in collaboration with the Federal Authority for Identification, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security. It aims to reduce the time taken to process each passenger at the airport from 25 seconds to just seven seconds by using facial recognition technology.
The facial recognition system will be introduced in three phases. First, it will be used at airport entrances and boarding gates. Later, it will be implemented in other areas as well. Thanks to the federal authority’s extensive database, passengers will not need to register their details in advance, making the process easier.
In addition to Etihad Airways, which has been a pioneer in using these new technologies, five other airlines at Zayed International Airport are also now using facial recognition for check-in and boarding. Soon, this technology will also be added to duty-free shops and Etihad Airways lounges to make travel even more convenient and efficient.
Zayed International Airport’s new system is part of a global trend towards biometric screening in air travel. Airports around the world are considering similar technologies. For example, Singapore is working on a passport-free immigration process using advanced biometrics. In India, the Digi Yatra program is being introduced at various airports to make travel easier with facial recognition.
