“Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with extremely poor outcomes,” said Dr. Cullen, professor of surgery and radiation oncology. The median survival period is usually only eight months with treatment and even less without it. The results of our trial were remarkable—we doubled the survival rate to 16 months. This success was so obvious that we ended the test early.
Study findings
The study involved 34 patients with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, who were divided into two groups. One group underwent standard chemotherapy, while the other received chemotherapy supplemented with intravenous infusion of 75 grams of vitamin C three times a week.
The results were promising. The vitamin C group demonstrated a median survival of 16 months, compared to only eight months in the standard treatment group. Patients who received vitamin C not only lived longer but also felt better and tolerated treatment more effectively.
Vitamin C and Brain Cancer
Dr. Cullen and his colleague Dr. Brian Allen also explored the benefits of vitamin C in the treatment of glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. In their study, high-dose vitamin C infusions showed the ability to improve survival rates even in this challenging situation.
Dr. Cullen saw particularly encouraging results in pancreatic cancer cases. “In some cases, taking vitamin C saved lives,” he said. “Three participants in our trial are still alive after nine years – a remarkable milestone given the generally dismal prognosis associated with pancreatic cancer.”
