Jamie Foxx reveals he suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2023; Know the symptoms and risk factors
Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has revealed that he suffered a ânear death experienceâ in 2023 due to a brain hemorrhage and stroke, which left him in a coma for 20 days. Fox said that when he woke up from the coma he found himself in a wheelchair and unable to walk. The 56-year-old says he has now fully recovered. Jamie Foxx has revealed he âwent to hell and back againâ after suffering a brain bleed and stroke in 2023, which was a ânear death experienceâ. Speaking about his condition, which happened while he was shooting a film in Atlanta, the actor says he doesnât remember about three weeks of his life.
Fox said he experienced bleeding in the brain which led to a stroke, which left him in a coma for 20 days. Fox said that when he woke up from the coma he found himself in a wheelchair and unable to walk. The Oscar-winning actor said he had to re-learn basic functions with the help of support staff at the hospital and depend on nurses for bathing.
Doctors told him that recovery was possible but that it would be a difficult process.
What is brain bleed?
Also known as intracranial hemorrhage, this condition is a type of stroke that causes bleeding in your head.
Doctors say this happens when your brain is unable to store oxygen and so it begins to rely on a series of blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients. And so, when a brain hemorrhage occurs, blood leaks or bursts from a blood vessel and pools within your skull and brain. This puts pressure on your brain, preventing oxygen and nutrients from reaching your brain tissues and cells.
According to experts, bleeding in the brain is common after falls or traumatic injuries and in people with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Brain hemorrhage is a life-threatening emergency, because it only takes three to four minutes for your brain cells to die if they donât get enough oxygen.

Doctors say there are two main areas of bleeding in your brain:
- inside your skull but outside the brain tissue
- inside brain tissue
Bleeding occurs primarily around the meninges, or the three membrane layers between the bone and skull and brain tissue.

Bleeding from the brain can be life threatening and cause permanent brain damage. The severity and outcome of a brain hemorrhage depends on its cause, location inside your skull, the size of the hemorrhage, and the time between bleeding and treatment. Once brain cells die, they donât come back.
The damage can be severe and result in physical, mental, and work-based disability.
Signs and symptoms of brain hemorrhage
Doctors say the first symptom of a brain bleed is a sudden and painful headache. Others include:
- Tingling, weakness, numbness, or paralysis in your face, arms, or legs
- nausea and vomiting
- confusion and dizziness
- slurred speech
- extreme fatigue and sleepiness
- difficulty swallowing
- lose sight
- stiff neck
- light sensitivity
- loss of balance
- shortness of breath and abnormal heart rhythm
- recovery
- loss of consciousness and coma
Risk Factors for Brain Hemorrhage
Doctors say the condition can affect anyone at any age, from newborns to infants, however, it is more common in adults over the age of 65. You may be at higher risk of a brain hemorrhage if you experience the following:
- high blood pressure
- substance use disorder
- smoking
- Bleeding conditions or conditions that require treatment with blood-thinning medication
- Pregnancy and Childbirth Conditions
- Conditions that affect the formation of your blood vessel walls
