To protect its pristine natural landscapes and promote responsible tourism Karnataka The government has implemented new tracking rules. The most significant change is the introduction of a daily limit of 300 trekkers, to ensure that the delicate ecosystems of popular trekking destinations are not affected.
To streamline the process and reduce the environmental impact, the government has launched an online booking portal ((Trekkers will now need to register and obtain permits before starting their adventure. This digital platform will help in reducing plastic waste.) Will also facilitate management, which is a serious concern in many tracking areas.
Currently, visitors can choose from five trekking trails: Kumar Parvat (via Subramanya), Bidahalli to Kumar Parvat, Bidahalli-Kumar Parvat-Subramanya, Chamarajanagar-Nagamale, and Talakauveri-Nishani Motte. It is anticipated that by the end of October, the portal will feature an additional 40 tracking routes. Additionally, visitors can also use the website to book wildlife and boat safaris.
The decision to impose the daily limit has been taken in response to the increasing number of trekkers visiting the natural landscapes of Karnataka. Kumar Parvat, one of the popular trekking destinations in the state, was closed in January after thousands of pilgrims visited the route on January 6-7. The trek route was reopened once again on 3 October.

By limiting the number of trekkers, the government hopes to reduce stress on the fragile ecosystem. Excessive foot traffic can lead to erosion, habitat destruction and wildlife disturbance. The online booking system will also help in keeping a check on the number of visitors and ensuring that the limit is not exceeded.
