What is Nipah virus?
The Nipa virus spreads primarily through bats of fruit between animals and people, also known as flying fox, but can also spread through pigs and other animals such as goats, horses, dogs, or cats. According to experts, the virus spreads when:
- Humans and animals have contact with physical fluids, such as blood, poop, urination, or saliva, of an infected animal.
- Humans eat foods that are contaminated by an infected animal.
- Man is in close contact with a person who has a Nipa virus, usually while taking care of them.
The best way to avoid the virus is to avoid exposure to sick animals in known transmission areas, which involves avoiding food products that an infected animal can be contaminated, such as a raw date palm sap or fruit.
This causes mild to severe symptoms, including encephalitis and death. Doctors say that there is no medicine or vaccine to treat it, and managing symptoms is the only way to cure the nipp.
What are the signs and symptoms of Nipah virus?
According to experts, the initial symptoms of Nipa virus include:
- High fever
- Headache
- Difficulty breathing
- cough and sore throat
- Diarrhea
- vomit
- Muscle pain and severe weakness
- Confusion and disorientation.
- Thin speech
- Seizure
- Coma
- Breathing issues
Symptoms usually begin within four to 14 days after exposure to the virus. First fever or headache is common and later respiratory problems such as breathing and difficulty in breathing develop.
In severe cases, a person can develop brain infections, which can be life-threatening and even fatal. However, experts are not sure why some people have serious symptoms and others are mild. In addition, some people with virus have no symptoms.
Is Nipah virus contagious?
According to doctors, the Nipa virus is highly infectious and can spread through physiological fluids such as saliva, poop, urine and blood. This means that if you are taking care of a person with a virus, you can get it when the person coughs or sneezes.
The virus is mainly spread from animals to humans. But it can also spread from person to another. And this is why doctors recommend care to wear protective equipment when treating a person with Nipah virus.
