According to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, Kolkata has been named India’s most crowded cityOvertook Bengaluru. Now, globally, Kolkata ranks as the second slowest city in terms of traffic speed – just behind Barranquilla in Colombia.
Reports suggest that it now takes more than 34 minutes to cover a distance of just 10 kilometers in Kolkata, at an average speed of 17.4 kmph. Bengaluru and Pune also lag behind with an average travel time of 34 minutes 10 seconds and 33 minutes 22 seconds respectively for the same distance.
A 10 kilometer journey in New Delhi takes an average of 23 minutes – reflecting better traffic management despite its size and population.
Three Indian cities – Kolkata, Bengaluru and Pune – rank in the top five globally for slowest average speed. London secured fifth position.
Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai are also among the most congested cities in India, with the average travel time for a 10 km journey recorded at 32 minutes, 30 minutes and 29 minutes respectively. Ahmedabad, Ernakulam and Jaipur were also identified as cities with slow travel speed.
Ahmedabad was close to Mumbai at 29 minutes for a 10 km journey, while Ernakulam and Jaipur’s average time was close to 28 minutes and 30 seconds.
