Myth 1: Leprosy is highly contagious.
Fact: Leprosy spreads very slowly and requires prolonged close contact with an infected person. These patients also need people’s care and sympathy. It cannot spread through casual contact such as shaking hands, hugging or sharing food. Most people have natural immunity to the bacteria, making transmission rare.
Myth 2: Leprosy is incurable.
Fact: Leprosy is completely curable Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), which is available free of charge worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent complications and disabilities. MDT combines antibiotics to kill bacteria and effectively stop disease progression.
Myth 3: Due to leprosy, body parts start falling.
Fact: Body parts do not fall due to leprosy. However, untreated cases can lead to nerve damageCauses deformity or disability. Loss of sensation due to nerve damage increases the risk of injury or secondary infection.
Myth 4: Leprosy is a punishment or curse. Only the poor can achieve this.
Fact: Leprosy is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, it is not the result of spiritual or moral failings. It can affect anyone. Social stigma stems from myths and misconceptions, which makes education and awareness important.
Myth 5: Leprosy existed only in ancient times.
Fact: Leprosy still affects thousands of people each year, especially in tropical and developing areas. Efforts to end it are ongoing, but removing stigma and barriers to healthcare remains a challenge.
Myth 6: Leprosy affects only the skin.
Fact: Leprosy can damage nerves and eyes and, if left untreated, can also lead to loss of sensation in the hands and feet. It can also cause muscle weakness and vision problems, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive care.
Myth 7: People suffering from leprosy should be kept separate.
Fact: Once treated, people with leprosy are not contagious and can live normal lives without isolation. Educating communities about it helps reduce stigma and promote reintegration into society.
