Thanni Chutney is a staple dish in Tamil households, loved for its spicy taste. It is usually paired with South Indian classic dishes like idli, dosa, uttapam and others. What sets this chutney apart? It is prepared with a mixture of spices, chana dal and coriander leaves. The best part is that you don’t need coconut to prepare it, but it gives a similar flavor profile. The word ‘thanni’ refers to ‘watery’ in Tamil, which refers to the thin consistency of the chutney.

To ensure that the Thanni Chutney lasts longer, make sure to store it in an airtight container. It protects from exposure to moisture and keeps it fresh for a long time. If you plan to use it within a few days, store it in the refrigerator.
How to make Thanni Chutney at home. Thanni Chutney Recipe
The recipe of Thanni Chutney was shared by Instagram page @diningwithdhoot. First of all, heat oil in a pan and add garlic cloves, finely chopped ginger and chopped green chillies. Fry for a minute or two, then add chopped onion and cook until translucent. Let the mixture cool and then pour it into a blender. – After this add green coriander, roasted gram dal and water. Blend to make a smooth paste. For tempering, heat oil in a pan and add asafoetida, mustard seeds, urad dal, dry red chilli, onion and a handful of curry leaves. – Cook well and add the prepared paste to it. Add salt as per taste and some more water if required. Give it a good mix and enjoy it with idli, upma, dosa or uttapam.
