Cirrhosis is usually caused by long-term alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or autoimmune liver disease. The Mayo Clinic says that every time the liver is injured, whether from excessive alcohol consumption or from some other cause, such as infection, it tries to repair itself. In this process, scar tissue is formed. As cirrhosis gets worse, more and more scar tissue begins to form, making it more difficult for the liver to do its job.
When cirrhosis reaches advanced stages, it can be life threatening. The damage caused by cirrhosis cannot be compensated. However, if the condition is diagnosed early and the underlying cause is treated, further damage can be minimized. According to the Mayo Clinic, “In rare cases, it may be reversible.”

Liquor

Avoid alcohol completely as it damages liver cells and aggravates cirrhosis, affecting the liver’s ability to regenerate and perform vital functions.

Processed foods like canned soups, chips and fast food contain excessive salt which worsens the fluid retention and swelling (ascites) associated with cirrhosis. Choose low-sodium options.

fried and fatty foods

Foods rich in saturated fat, such as fried snacks, full-fat dairy products and fatty cuts of meat, can put stress on the liver, leading to inflammation and fat accumulation.

raw or undercooked shellfish

Shellfish such as oysters and clams may contain bacteria that are harmful to people with cirrhosis. This can cause serious infections like Vibrio vulnificus.

red and processed meats

They are high in saturated fat and are difficult for a damaged liver to process. Stick to lean protein sources like poultry or plant-based proteins.

flavored foods and beverages

Excessive sugar consumption from soda, candy and desserts can lead to fat buildup in the liver, also known as hepatic steatosis. This may impair liver functioning.

refined carbohydrates

White bread, pasta and pastries increase blood sugar, which burdens the liver. Choose whole grains like brown rice or quinoa.

High Vitamin A Foods/Supplements

Overconsumption of supplements containing liver, fish oil or retinol can lead to toxicity, placing further stress on the liver.
