She says that the results of the test are usually interpreted as follows:
Shortage: Serum 25 (OH) D Level <20 Ng/ML (<50 NMOL/L)
scarce: Levels between 20 and 30 ng/ml (50 and 75 NMOL/L)
Sufficient: Level above 30 ng/ml (> 75 NMOL/L)
“Depending on the patient’s symptoms and health conditions, additional tests such as serum calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and alkaline phosphate levels can be recommended to assess a comprehensive impact on calcium and phosphate metabolism,” she explains.
Remedy for vitamin D deficiency
Addressing vitamin D deficiency involves changes in lifestyle, diet and in some cases, combination of supplement. However, it is important to practice sun protection – using sunscreen and to be conscious of the time when it is safe to be out.”
She advises to include the following vitamin D-rich foods in her diet:
- Fatty fish like salmon, trout, tuna, sardine and mackerel
- Eggs, which are good – although not extraordinary – source
- Cod Liver Oil is traditionally used as a remedy for reduction
- Some varieties of mushrooms that grow in natural sun
- Buddhist foods like breakfast grains, almonds, oats, and soya milk, and orange juice
