As the highlight of the annual Malvern Autumn Show, this event has become something of a tradition. The list of newcomers also includes eight-year-old Dasha Edwards from South Wales in gardening. Along with fellow green-fingered growers Chris Fowler and Kevin Forty (all UK), Dasha helped raise the tallest 41 cm (1 ft 4.1 in long) eggplant at her family’s farm park near Cardiff.

Then, there was 81-year-old Ian Neale (UK), who won the Guinness World Records title with a green pepper weighing 966 grams (2 lb 2.8 oz). The price of black pepper in any local supermarket is seven times higher than the average example. Another well-known figure on the British gardening scene, Joe Atherton of Nottingham, known as the “King of the Longs”, added two impressive root vegetables to his list of achievements. According to Guinness World Records, they won the title of longest turnip, measuring 4.842 m (15 ft 10.6 in) long, and longest radish, measuring 7.401 m (24 ft 3.4 in) longer than a minibus.
Atherton’s resume already includes the longest carrot of 6.245 m (20 ft 5.86 in) established in 2016, the longest parsnip of 6.55 m (21 ft 5.87 in) recorded in 2017, and the longest carrot of 8.56 m (28 ft) recorded in 2017.
