The country is mourning the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died due to age-related health issues. He was 92 years old. According to AIIMS, Dr Singh, an acclaimed economist and politician, died suddenly due to unconsciousness at his Delhi residence on December 26, 2024. Known for his humility, intelligence and leadership, Dr. Singh leaves behind a legacy of dedication towards the progress and welfare of the country.
Dr. Singh, a person who likes simplicity, also extended his practical approach towards his diet. In an earlier conversation with NDTV, he expressed his preference for a vegetarian diet, explaining, āI donāt generally eat meat. Iām a vegetarian at home. Iām not imposing a moral code of vegetarianism versus non-vegetarianism. I think We must choose wisely.ā
Dr. Singh also emphasized the health benefits of a plant-based diet and said, āMedical science is now reaching the conclusion that a vegetarian diet is better than a meat-rich diet for maintaining oneās health.ā However, his adherence to vegetarianism was not without exceptions. During a visit to Bangladesh in 2011, Dr Singh expressed his desire to try Hilsa fish, a Bengali delicacy famous in the region. āI am willing to break my vegetarian fast because I have heard about the deliciousness of Hilsa fish. Therefore, I am willing to make this exception,ā he told a news agency.
Dr Singh is survived by his wife Gurcharan Singh and their three daughters, who, like the rest of the country, mourn the passing of a great figure in Indian politics and public life.
