In what came to be a shocking incident, a 21-year-old girl was advised that getting pregnant would provide relief from her extreme menstrual pain. grace almiThe woman, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, has always struggled with unbearable pain during her periods. It got so bad that sometimes it continued for three weeks straight. Despite trying many things – doctors and contraceptives – there was no improvement in her condition.
Often, her condition was dismissed by doctors as a sensitivity. Speaking to Express.co.uk she said, “Right from the start, I had very heavy periods and they were really painful. Sometimes they would last for three weeks. My mother would take me to doctors. But at that age they just said it would be sorted out.”
She further explained how when she was 15 years old she was told that not much could be done. “Normally we would tell women to have a baby,” Grace was told. She also revealed, “One said ‘We know you’re young, but it helps if you decide to have a child.’ It is a false narrative that having a baby will solve gynecological problems.”
Earlier this year, things got a little extreme for her. She suffered from back pain, gastrointestinal problems and hair loss. However, doctors still couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Eventually, she had to undergo a laparoscopy, as experts believed she might have endometriosis. She was then diagnosed with adenomyosis – a condition where the lining of the uterus grows into a muscular wall. “They said we didn’t find any endometriosis.”
Grace explained. “I was absolutely devastated. I wanted validation for my pain. Then they said we think you have a condition called adenomyosis.”
When her condition was discovered, she was advised to undergo a hysterectomy. This is a procedure to remove the uterus. This also meant that she would stop menstruating and would not be able to conceive. “I’ll have to live with this until I’m ready to have a hysterectomy,” she said.
After going through so much, Grace is trying to take each day as it comes and finding holistic ways to cope. She has limited her diet and is trying to eat as healthy as possible.
