Miranda Hart: Lyme disease left me bedridden

Comedian Miranda Hart has revealed her struggle with chronic fatigue after being diagnosed with Lyme disease.
In her new book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, Hart gives a candid account of the past 10 years, including the challenges posed by ill health.
The star’s autobiography also provides a rare insight into Hart’s personal life, including the revelation that she married at the age of 51.
Hart, who is best known for her popular BBC show Miranda, told the BBC that it had been a “tough year” but that she was “thrilled” with her marriage, and that she was “really looking forward to getting back into something silly.” Was curious”.

“It’s great to be back in television, I feel so excited to be here,” she told The One Show.
“Because once you’re bedridden and confined to the house because of a fatigue-based chronic illness, it takes a long time to be diagnosed — sadly, I know a lot of people are going to be diagnosed.” Will – So you miss life so much. So I’m thrilled to sit here.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans through a tick bite.
The disease can be easily treated if detected and diagnosed early, but for a long time, the actor didn’t know what was making her feel unwell.
It often begins with circular rashes and can cause flu-like symptoms, nerve pain, and sometimes numbness in one or both sides of the face (facial paralysis).
For most people, symptoms are short-lived and can be alleviated by taking antibiotics, but a minority suffer long-term symptoms, including chronic fatigue and unexplained neurological problems.
The star says that being confined to her home for such a long period was incredibly difficult for her.
“Until you get (that) exhausted, you don’t understand what it’s really like to not get up off the floor,” Hart told BBC Radio 4’s Today Show.
“I was basically bed-bound – and housebound. There were times when I would look at the glass of water, and think ‘I don’t know how to get this up.’
“All anyone wants is to be heard, accepted, loved and seen…and when you don’t – especially in a medical situation – that’s the worst situation.”
Part of why he wrote the book was to share his discovery that helped him heal, he said.
“I thought I needed to research this whole health expertise and dialogue, but I was at home alone in bed, the doctors didn’t know what to do with me and I couldn’t take a cold dip or go Could return to yoga.
“So I wondered what are the universal truths? So I researched for years, when I felt I was able, and the book contains 10 keys to living well, which I call my treasure.
“And they’ve really, really (helped). I feel like, despite the pain it’s caused, I’m living a life of joy, meaning and satisfaction in a way I’ve never seen before.
“I feel like I know who I am honestly, in a way that I never knew I needed to, which is incredible.”
When she finally received her diagnosis, she was able to navigate her teenage years.
“I probably got a tick-borne disease when I was 14 or 15… and that’s when my symptoms started,” she recalled.
“It was a huge relief. I mean, being misunderstood and being judged wrong is one of the hardest things about situations like this. Definitely.”
The actress, who began her career performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in the early 2000s, is best known for playing the unlucky in love and socially awkward Miranda in her self-titled TV sitcom, which ran from 2009 to 2015.
But, off-screen, Hart’s love life seems to have a happy ending: At the age of 51, she revealed, she married a man she met during the pandemic.
“Marrying at your mid-life is a perfect opportunity for happiness and fun,” he said. “it’s the best!”
“He’s my best friend, we have the most fun… The fact that I can meet someone – it’s not a rom-com story, but it’s hope, and that’s why I feel, No matter what situation you’re in, there’s always hope that things really do change.”
After taking time off to rest and recuperate, and with her new husband, Hart suggested she finally felt well enough to begin work on new projects.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into some silly situations now, I miss the studio floor, I miss the laughs.”
After the show, Hart said she found her fans’ joy at her news “really touching.”

Hart ended the video with a sharp criticism of her husband – only his hand was visible in the clip – which she jokingly said was “exquisite”.
