Mohsin was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. “You can have fatty liver even without drinking alcohol. It happens without you realising it, probably because our sleep pattern is not right. That’s what happened,” he said.
What is non-alcoholic fatty liver?
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, often called NAFLD, is a liver problem that affects people who drink little or no alcohol. In NAFLD, too much fat accumulates in the liver. It is becoming increasingly prevalent due to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD is often asymptomatic, but it can develop into more serious conditions, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and even cirrhosis.
Can non-alcoholic fatty liver cause heart attack?
Dr. Niranjan Hiremath, Assistant Professor, Senior Consultant Cardiovascular and Aortic Surgeon, and Surgical Lead of the Apollo Aortic Program, pointed out that the incidence of heart attacks is becoming increasingly common in young individuals, especially those in their 30s, due to lifestyle factors and the rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Dr. Niranjan said, “Cardiovascular events traditionally seen in older people are now affecting younger people as well. This is due to poor dietary choices, sedentary behavior, obesity and metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions such as insulin resistance and high cholesterol. NAFLD, characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver unrelated to alcohol, impairs metabolism and contributes to the development of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attack. Stress, sleep deprivation and smoking further increase these risks, showing how early lifestyle choices can lead to significant cardiovascular problems.”
How to prevent heart attack at the age of 30?
Dr. Niranjan explains that significant lifestyle adjustments are necessary to prevent heart attacks, especially in young adults.
– Prioritizing a balanced diet that includes enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat proteins, and cutting down on processed foods loaded with sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, is an important component.
Regular exercise is equally important; at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
– Additionally, stress management, getting adequate sleep and avoiding smoking are fundamental to maintaining heart health.
