In the last few days, Maharashtra saw an increase in the number of Guilan-Barre syndrome (GBS) cases. GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which a person’s immune system accidentally attacks its peripheral nervous system part of the nerves that indicates the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, the US National Institute of Health states Is. The Maharashtra government has appealed to the citizens not to panic and visit a government hospital as any symptom, IANS said. Citizens should also implement preventive measures, the government said in its appeal.

Update GBS cases in Maharashtra

According to a release by the State Public Health Department released late on Monday night, 110 suspected GBS are suspected patients and one death has been reported so far. Eight of these have been diagnosed as confirmation of GBS cases. Of the 110 suspected patients, around 88 are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 15 Pimpri Chinchwad is from Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and from seven other districts.

Symptoms of Guilan-Baire Syndrome

Warning signs to include include:

  • Weakness
  • Condolence change
  • Eye muscle and difficulty with vision
  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking or chewing
  • Hands and feet prick or pin and needles
  • Pain that can be severe, especially at night
  • Coordination problems and instability
  • Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure
  • Digestion and/or problems with bladder control

In a viral video recently on Instagram, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, Neurologist, MD Medicine and DM Neurology (AIIMS Delhi), share an important tip to prevent the disease.

Dr. Sehrawat says, “One of the main reasons is gastroenteritis which is due to a bacterial C Jejuni. Although there are many other reasons, it is what you all should know because it is a reason that we can avoid,” Dr. Sehrawat says.

Here are some diet tips to stop GB:

  • Avoid eating outside.
  • Avoid contaminated food and water.
  • Take care of your immunity as well.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables properly before consumption.
  • Increase your intake of vitamin C-rich foods.
  • If you eat outside, avoid foods such as cheese that can be stored for long periods, increasing the chances of bacterial development. Other foods to avoid inclusion of cheese and rice.

Dr. Sehrawat states that the disease is best treated within 2 weeks. “We have always seen these matters, but a matter of outbreak. Not to panic. Take care of yourself. Now you know how to take care of at least one reason,” she says. Take preventive measures and consult your doctor if you experience any signal or symptoms.
