In a rare occurrence, the ‘doomsday fish’ was spotted off the coast of Grandview Beach in Encinitas, Southern California. This deep sea creature has surprised both scientists and folklore lovers. They are often referred to as doomsday fish due to their mythological reputation of being associated with earthquakes or natural disasters. Reports suggest that in the months before the 2011 earthquake, 20 oarfish were discovered on Japanese beaches.
With this spotting, this is the second time the oarfish has been discovered in the same area. Many people shared shocking pictures of the creature on their official X handle.
“Look what decision has been taken to give a second presentation! Last week, another #oarfish washed up on Grandview Beach in Encinitas and was spotted by Scripps Oceanography PhD candidate Alison LaFerriere. This magnificent creature is approximately 9 to 10 feet long,” the Scripps Institution of Oceanography wrote in posting the photos online.
Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection Manager Ben Frable, speaking to the media, said, “Like previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will be able to tell us a lot about the oarfish’s biology, anatomy, genomics and life history. Will be.” ,
Only 20 oarfish sightings have been reported in California since 1901. Meaning, they are extremely unusual. Since the fish usually live 20 to 200 meters below the surface in temperate and tropical waters, seeing them near the surface is a rare occurrence.
