Health Authority in the United Kingdom is on high warnings due to a sharp increase in cases of human metapnemia (HMPV), a respiratory virus is often referred to as a “mystery virus”. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently released a report, especially an increase in infection among the elderly.
growing number
Recent data suggests that 4.9 percent of the people tested for HMPV in the UK are positive, and the rate of infection increases by 7.3 percent in people aged 80 and above. Confirming the increasing appearance of the virus, more than 7,800 samples were tested.
This growth has inspired health officials to renew the call for preventive measures, including face masks to control the spread of respiratory diseases like HMPV.
Increase in cases comes at a difficult time for National Health Services (NHS), which is already under stress due to diseases like flu. NHS England Chief Executive Officer Amanda Prichared expressed concern over the situation. “Our frontline staff is facing immense pressure. Flu and other viruses are taking a toll on both patients and health services, ”he said.
Symptoms of hmpvhuman metapneumovirus usually cause respiratory symptoms that range from light to severe. Common symptoms include:
– Run or conjugged nose
– Cough
– Fever
– sore throat
– Difficulty breathing
– wheezing (in severe cases)
While most people recover within a few days, the virus can give rise to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in elderly people, young children and people with weak immune systems.
Is India at risk?
India’s health officials have assured the public that there is no immediate reason for concern. Human metapnemias have been known globally since 2001 and usually cause mild, self-limiting infections.
Sangh Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan recently said that the country is ready to handle any possible growth in affairs. “While respiratory diseases grow during the winter months, we are well equipped to manage the situation,” he said.
Guidelines to stay safe
The Ministry of Health has issued preventive guidelines to help reduce the spread of HMPV and other respiratory diseases:
– Wash hands often with soap and water.
– Avoid touching your face, especially nose and mouth.
– Wear a mask in crowded or bad ventilated areas.
– Keep distance from people showing symptoms of respiratory diseases.
– Keep your living space clean and well ventilated.
