Aurora chasers in the US have another reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving as the forecast shows there may be a chance to see the northern lights on this day as the solar storm heads towards Earth.
A massive concentration of solar particles, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), erupted from an active sunspot on Monday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. It has a good chance of hitting Earth on Thursday or Friday, causing a minor to moderate geomagnetic storm.
Here’s what to know about the northern lights and how to see them on Thanksgiving night in the US.
Auroras are best seen around the magnetic poles of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres in Europe, Asia, and North America. In the US, Alaska is known for the best views of the Northern Lights. However, the aurorae from the poles will be visible from a distance due to the incoming solar storm on Thursday. The Kp index of geomagnetic activity is 5, which means the northern lights will also be brighter.
According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute website, the northern lights can also be visible low on the horizon in many cities.
They include:
- boise, idaho
- Cheyenne, Wyoming
- lincoln, nebraska
- indianapolis
- Annapolis, Maryland
