What happened to Notre Dame?
The 2019 fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral, possibly caused by an electrical fault, destroyed much of its roof and caused its iconic spire to collapse. It took 400 firefighters 15 hours to bring the fire under control, which caused extensive damage. While the bell tower and façade remained largely intact, many priceless relics and artefacts were significantly damaged.
French President Emmanuel Macron had promised to restore the cathedral within five years, a promise now fulfilled after an effort of 2,055 days and $800 million. The restoration involved 2,000 craftsmen using 2,000 oak trees to repair the ceiling, restore 17th-century paintings, and recreate the gargoyle sculptures.
