Indian Ambassador to UNESCO Vishal V. Sharma formally handed over the dossier to Lazare Eloundo Asomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Once declared by UNESCO, Orchha will be the only state-protected World Heritage Site in India.

The journey to this recognition has been a five-year effort. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board initiated proposals to include both Orchha and Bhedaghat in the UNESCO tentative list in 2019 and 2021 respectively. After an extensive evaluation process, the Archaeological Survey of India forwarded these proposals to UNESCO, from which detailed documents were prepared in collaboration with expert organizations. Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism and Culture, Shiv Shekhar Shukla stressed the state’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Orchha and enhancing tourist facilities. Orchha is famous for its Bundela architecture, majestic palaces, temples and forts. Jahangir Palace, Raja Ram Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, and Orchha Fort The complex has some major landmarks. The city’s location on the banks of the Betwa River adds to its natural beauty and spiritual significance.

The Central Government every year recommends to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to nominate one heritage of the country to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Presently, there are the temple complex of Khajuraho, the stupas and rock shelters of Sanchi. Bhimbetka has been nominated for the World Heritage List. 14 sites of the state are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Khajuraho temple group, Bhimbetka caves and Sanchi Stupa are included in the UNESCO tentative list, Khuni Bhandara of Burhanpur, rock art sites of Chambal valley, Bhojeshwar Mahadev temple of Bhojpur, Gond monuments of Ramnagar in Mandla, historical group of Dhamnar in Mandu. The group of monuments, the historical group of Orchha, in the Narmada valley includes Bhedaghat-Lametta Ghats, Satpura Tiger Reserve and Chanderi.
