diabetes It is a chronic health condition that affects millions of people around the world, and its complications go far beyond well-known problems like heart disease and kidney failure. But did you know that there are some symptoms of diabetes that are specific to women due to differences in hormonal balance, reproductive health and physiology? It is important to recognize these symptoms early and get proper management at the right time. So what are these unique symptoms?
We contacted Dr. Paras Agarwal, Clinical Director and Head Diabetes Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram and Dr. Pranav Ghodi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, to discuss the symptoms of diabetes seen only in women. Let’s share.
Dr Ghodi and Dr Aggarwal share five symptoms of diabetes Which are especially relevant for women:
1. Frequent yeast infections
Dr. Agarwal explains that high blood glucose levels provide favorable conditions for yeast growth, which causes frequent vaginal infections with yeast. Its symptoms are itching, redness and white thick discharge.
What to do:
• Maintain good control of blood sugar.
• Use antifungal medicines prescribed by the doctor.
• Wear breathable, cotton underwear to reduce moisture.
2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Dr Ghodi explains that diabetes weakens the immune system, and hence women are at risk of bacterial infections like UTI. Symptoms include burning during urination, cloudy urine, and frequent urination.
What to do:
• Monitor and control blood sugar levels.
• Drink plenty of water and urinate regularly.
• UTI should be treated immediately with antibiotics to avoid complications.
3. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Symptoms
Dr. Agarwal explains that women with PCOS commonly experience insulin resistance, which can contribute to type 2 diabetes. Common symptoms include irregular menstruation, increased hair growth on the face or body, and being overweight.
What to do:
• Follow a low-glycemic diet and engage in regular physical activity.
• See your doctor to take prescribed medication, such as metformin, to increase your insulin sensitivity.
• If you have PCOS, get yourself checked for diabetes regularly.
4. History of gestational diabetes
Dr. Ghodi explains that gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when hormonal changes impair insulin function. Dr. Ghodi says women who have gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
What to do:
• Monitor blood sugar levels during and after pregnancy.
• Keep getting regular glucose tolerance tests done after delivery.
• Maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine after delivery.
5. Sexual disease
Dr. Ghodi says that high glucose levels can damage blood vessels and nerves, which can reduce blood flow to the genital area and weaken sensations. This may cause one or more of the following—vaginal dryness, low libido, or even pain during intercourse.
What to do:
• Control blood sugar
• Use lubricants or visit a gynecologist for vaginal moisturizers
• See a psychiatrist for emotional or psychological issues.
“These symptoms of diabetes can overlap with other diseases; Therefore it is always a good practice to consult an endocrinologist if such symptoms arise,” said Dr Ghodi.
