The season of Summer Road Trip is officially here, and if you are parents, you know the drill. You have also packed sunscreen, games, extra clothes and perhaps a travel playlist. But as soon as you leave for the journey, hunger strikes. And suddenly, this is a snack time. You pull into a roadside cafe, your children are dying of hunger, and you are thinking: Can I give them on Earth that will not cause stomach discomfort later?
Something surprising here: A famous pediatrician says that your safest betting can actually be a fresh French fries. Yes seriously! Dr. Nihar Parekh, Pediatrician, MBBS, DCH, MD (USAIM), took on Instagram to share their Go-Two Snack Advice for parents at the move.
“The safest junk food when you are traveling with your children and get stuck in a strange place, fresh French fries are made,” he said. “They are not healthy, but they are easy to find, fried at high temperatures, and are sterile, so the risk of stomach worms is minimal.”
And honestly, it makes it very understandable.
When you are on the road, cleanliness becomes a matter of great concern. Sandwich left fruit with suspected handling, or packed snacks of unknown origin can cause a greater risk compared to a hot batch of freshly fried potatoes. With least fries, you know that they have just come out of the fryer, are very hot for germs to survive, and possibly appeal that your children will not argue.
It said that it is not the best idea to rely completely on fries during your journey. So how do you balance the reality of traveling with your goal of keeping snacks healthy?
Here are some easy, notable hacks to reduce junk food while avoiding road travel:
1. You leave the smartbour pack, pack a mini-cooler with pre-cut fruits (eg apple or oranges), cheese cubes, boiled eggs, or curd tubes. Pair them with full grain crackers or roasted makhana for fiber-rich stage.
2. Choose less evil
If the fries are on the menu, choose the option of the plain version – place the loaded cheese or excess salt. And the ketchup becomes easier on the pouch, which is loaded with sugar.
3. Hydration first
Sometimes, children confuse thirst with hunger. Always offer water before opening that snack bag. Reusable bottles filled with cold water (or even coconut water) can help curb unnecessary snacking.
4. Determine time for behavior
Set a specific snack time instead of giving every time in someone’s boredom. It reduces grazing and teaches children only to eat when they are really hungry.
5. For example leadership
Follow what children see. If they are amazed at bananas instead of chips, they are more likely to follow the suit.
So yes, go ahead and order those fresh fries if your journey is the best option during the break. But with a little prep and mindful options, you can keep junk food at least – and your road trip can be very smooth.
