Recently an incident occurred involving a Singaporean tourist. Old Delhi has cast a dubious shadow on Passenger The experience that tourists are promised in India is the ultimate one. This terrifying experience, shared widely on social media, has sparked discussion about tourist safety and the challenges faced by visitors in the heart of the Indian capital.
Travel vlogger Sylvia Chan made a video of the incident that happened with her, which soon went viral. Initially, she and her friend met a friendly and kind rickshaw driver in the lanes of Old Delhi. But once the two of them boarded his rickshaw to go from Jama Masjid to Red Fort, the driver refused to take the payment of ₹100 fixed between them and said that he would take the money after taking them to Chandni Chowk.

The journey through the city’s labyrinthine lanes took a turn for the worse when the driver took them to stops without any prior notice, often forcing them to visit certain shops in the Spice Market and even drove them to a certain shop in Khari Baoli. “We wanted to explore the area on our own, but he kept asking us to come with him. He just wanted to bring us back to his auto,” Chan said in the video. Things got worse when the girls asked him to drop them at Krishna Market. The rickshaw driver then took them to an unknown location 5 km from Chandni Chowk and demanded Rs 6,000, much more than the agreed fare.

Alone and cornered, the girls finally paid him ₹2,000 and left the area. The vlogger added, “We always support local drivers, but this experience has made us realise that it would be better to take an Uber.”

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among netizens, with many expressing solidarity with the victim and questioning safety measures for tourists. “He was giving off bad vibes throughout the entire tour, taking you to stupid places you never asked to go to and he would only ask for money when he was in a relatively quiet place so you wouldn’t make a fuss. Horrible behavior,” one user wrote. Others shared similar experiences in places like Vietnam and Thailand. “I wouldn’t even talk to him initially. I had a similar experience in Hanoi once and asked the hotel staff for help. Thankfully the hotel staff sorted it out pretty quickly (and thankfully he even got us back to the hotel somehow),” another user wrote.
