Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, is in India just ahead of the Mahakumbh Mela. After his arrival, many of his pictures and videos went viral on social media in which he can be seen visiting the temple. When people started seeing these pictures and videos, many people wondered which temple this was.
Wearing Indian attire and paying homage to the culture, Lauren visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi before heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. Swami Kailashanand Giri Ji Maharaj of Niranjani Akhara also came to the temple along with Ms. Lawrence.
For those unaware, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred Shiva temple. The main deity is known as Vishwanath or Vishveshvara – meaning ruler of the universe. The city of Varanasi is also called Kashi, and hence this temple is popularly called Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
After being destroyed and rebuilt several times, the present structure stands near the original temple site. Hindus around the world try to visit the temple at least once in their lifetime as they believe that visiting the temple and taking a dip in the Ganges will bring salvation to the devotee.
If planning a trip, it is important to note that the best time to visit Varanasi for temple darshan is in the winter months – between October to March. The weather remains cold during this period. However, it is suitable for travelers as most of the sightseeing is outside.
