The team from the University of California San Diego said that, while eggs contain high levels of dietary cholesterol, they also provide nutrients beneficial for cognitive function. They examined the effects of egg consumption on changes in cognitive function among 890 ambulatory adults (357 men; 533 women) over the age of 55. The results, published in the journal Nutrients, showed that women who ate more eggs experienced less decline in verbal fluency over four years.
Additionally, women who ate more eggs maintained their ability to name categories of objects, such as animals, better than those who ate fewer eggs or none at all. These benefits were seen even after taking various lifestyle and health factors into account. The cognitive benefits of eggs are due to choline which may help with brain function, memory and communication between brain cells. Eggs also contain vitamins like B-6, B-12 and folic acid, which may help prevent brain shrinkage and delay cognitive decline.
Although the study found no significant effects on cognitive function in men, no harmful effects of egg consumption were observed in either gender. The researchers said the finding is important given the growing concern over cognitive decline as people live longer. Overall, the findings suggest that eggs may be a cost-effective and accessible way to support cognitive health in women, said UC San Diego professor Donna Critz-Silverstein, who led the study.
