In an effort to make travel more convenient, Thailand has implemented biometric verification at six major airports. This will help in strengthening the immigration and boarding process. The new technology will come into use from December 1 for international flights and November 1 for domestic flights. Led by the Airports Authority of Thailand (AOT), this initiative marks an important step towards modernizing air travel and improving the travel experience for millions of visitors.
To avail this facility, passengers must be able to share their personal identification information at check-in counters or self-check-in kiosks. Once the Airport Authority of Thailand (AOT) has registered the passengers’ biometric information and itinerary, they can proceed from the baggage drop section to the boarding gate without showing their boarding pass or passport. However, it is important to note that this agreement covers only one journey, and passengers will have to repeat the process for their next journey.
Passengers can also register their biometric information online during the check-in process. For those who prefer the self-service option, the process is very easy – choose your airline, enter your details on the online check-in page, and follow the instructions to enrol. By scanning your boarding pass barcode, uploading passport or ID information, and completing a facial scan, you can avoid manual checks.
So far, biometric technology has only been implemented at six major airports and covers major travel hubs throughout Thailand. Airports are listed below:
  • Suvarnabhumi International Airport
  • Don Mueang International Airport
  • Chiang Mai International Airport
  • Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport
  • Phuket International Airport
  • Hat Yai International Airport
