Cases of head and neck cancer are increasing globally, and experts say that tobacco remains the main cause – the use of mouthwash or concerns over genetics. Dr. According to Mandar Deshpande, the head of Head and Neck Oncology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Surgical Oncology at Mumbai, “out of three factors – Tobacco, mouthwash, and genetics -tobacco is the most important contributor for head and neck cancer.”
These cancers include oral cavity, throat, voice box and people affecting related areas. Lifestyle factors, especially the use of tobacco and alcohol, are among the major risk factors.
Tobacco: The most dangerous risk factor
Dr. Deshpande explains that tobacco – whether smoked or chewed – is the primary cause of mutation in the mouth and throat tissue, which can cause cancer over time. “Tobacco contains carcinogenic substances that harm the lining of the oral cavity directly. Adventures such as Areka Nuts (Betels) and Chemical-Laced PAN spices such as adorables only decide the risk by creating a predetermined condition known as orally known as fibrosis,” they say.
He also states that a combination of tobacco and alcohol increases the risk significantly. “When used simultaneously, tobacco and alcohol acted co -operating and multiplied the possibility of development of head and neck cancer.”
Risk of mouthwash and cancer: Is there any link?
There has been a public debate about whether alcohol -based mouthwash can increase the risk of oral cancer. However, Dr. Deshpande explains that current evidence does not support this concern.
“There is no strong evidence that the use of mouthwash, even from alcohol, causes head and neck cancer,” they say. “While excessive use can irritate the mouth lining, normal use is not harmful according to dental guidance.”
Genetics: A Less Factor Factor
While genetic plays an important role in some cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer, Dr. Deshpande states that head and neck cancer are more commonly connected to lifestyle than hereditary factors.
“Oral cancer can be prevented through lifestyle changes to a large extent. Although genetics can increase a person’s sensitivity to environmental risks, they are not the main causes of these cancer,” they say. He also notes that thyroid cancer can have a genetic link, but they differ in nature.
Prevention and preliminary detection importance
Dr. Deshpande shows the need for awareness about initial warning signs, such as frequent mouth ulcers, white or red patches in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, or non-healing lesions.
“Regular dental check-ups and medical attention to abnormal symptoms can be detected quickly,” he says, “regular dental check-ups may reveal and improve better treatment results.”
The most effective way to reduce the risk of head and neck cancer is to avoid tobacco and limit alcohol consumption.
Often in factors associated with head and neck cancer -tobacco, mouthwash and genetics -tobacco are the most dangerous. While mouthwash and genetic tendency can play a minor role, lifestyle options remain the greatest impact.
