Visiting Europe is on the bucket list of almost all of us. However, obtaining a Schengen visa can often be an overwhelming task. But what are we telling you that there is a place in Europe where you will not need a visa to live or work? Yes, you read that right!
svalbard It is a stunning archipelago, located high above the Arctic Circle. This is a place where there is snow cover for most of the year.

Governed by Norway, Svalbard is known for its unique immigration policies. Due to the Svalbard Treaty of 1920, people from any country can live, work, and explore the archipelago without the need for a visa or residence permit. This open-door approach makes Svalbard a unique destination.
Unlike many, this European destination has an extremely easy immigration system and no visa is required. Meaning, no matter where you are from the EU, US or Asia, you can pack your bags and move to Svalbard!
While Svalbard operates under this visa-free policy, you usually have to pass through mainland Norway to get there. And this is where it gets tricky! Mainland Norway is part of the Schengen Area.
While planning to Svalbard may be tempting and even seem like an easy task, it is important to note that living in the archipelago comes with its own set of challenges. The environment is extreme and winter temperatures drop below -20 °C – accompanied by long periods of darkness. Only during the summer months, residents can experience 24 hours of daylight.
Housing is limited and the isolation can often be overwhelming. Health insurance is essential for those planning a long-term stay in Svalbard. Emergency medical care is available in Svalbard, but residents must cover the cost themselves.
The most popular reason for people to visit Svalbard is to see the Northern Lights. With intricate planning and perfect timing, visitors can experience the magic of the Aurora Borealis and create memories to last a lifetime.

To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, it is important that you visit Svalbard during the Polar Nights, which last from late October to mid-February. This period offers the darkest conditions – ideal for aurora observations. The best chances of seeing the Northern Lights are between 6 pm and midnight and again between 4 am and 8 am.
