The outbreak of meningitis kills 26 people in Nigeria; What is this severe brain infection?
Nigerian officials have confirmed that the outbreak of a meningitis in the northwest was behind the death of at least 26 people in several weeks. The spread of the disease in KB state began in late January, with more than 200 suspicious cases recorded. Also known as inflammation of the area around your brain and spinal cord, meningitis is a life-threatening condition. Maningitis is more common during hot weather in Nigeria and a major public health challenge.

Experts have called for the local people to take precautionary measures and immediate medical attention.
Nigerian officials have confirmed that in the last two months, there was a meningitis in the north -west behind the death of at least 26 people. The spread of the disease in KBB state began in January as 200 suspected cases were registered, State Commissioner for Health, Moses Ismail asked reporters in the state capital Birin KB.
Ismail reported that medical supply, including doctors and healthcare staff, has already reached the affected areas, and separation centers have been established to prevent further spread of the disease. Sokoto, about 150 kilometers (90 mi) from another state and KBB in the northwest, has urged the residents to be vigilant after being suspected of several cases.
Experts have asked local people to take precautionary measures and to pay attention to immediate medical attention on the nearest health facility if they are experiencing symptoms such as high fever, rigid neck and severe headache.
Maningitis is more common during hot weather in Nigeria and is a major public health challenge in Africa’s most populous country, affecting the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord. Apart from meningitis, Nigeria is also struggling with malaria and is the most burden in the world.
What is meningitis?

Symptoms and symptoms of meningitis
