The outbreak of Norovirus hits P&O cruise in Europe, ‘leave as flies’

The outbreak of a suspected Norovirus killed the P&O Iona cruise ship, causing passengers to become ill with vomiting and diarrhea. P&O Cruise confirmed the disease but confident security measures are applicable. Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads through contaminated food and surfaces.

The outbreak of a suspected Norovirus has killed the P&O ion cruise ship, making many passengers ill. The ship carrying 5,000 guests and 1,800 crew members is currently sailing through Belgium on a seven-day northern European visit.
Passengers have reported people to vomiting restaurants, decks and outside the cabin. “People are falling like flies,” a passenger told the media, saying that a large number of guests and staff are showing symptoms.
The P&O Cruise confirmed that some passengers reported symptoms of stomach disease, but said that the number of affected people is less than one percent on those ships. The company did not share the details about the infected crew members, but assured that strict health and safety protocols are in place.
P&O spokesperson said, “Gastrointestinal diseases are common and easily spread to places like hotels, schools and restaurants.”
Passengers who are unable to participate in onshore activities due to illness will get full refund.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes stomach flu. It spreads through direct contact with contaminated food, surfaces and infected people. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps.

Dehydration is a major risk, as the body loses fluid due to vomiting and diarrhea. This can cause dizziness, dry mouth and low urine. There is no specific drug for norovirus, and doctors recommend drinking lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.

How to be safe from Norovirus

Since Norovirus cruise spreads quickly to crowded places, there are some ways to protect themselves here:

– Wash your hands frequently – Especially before eating or touching your face, use soap and water especially.
– Avoid close contact with sick people – Stay away from those who show symptoms.
– sanitize surfaces – bottom table, door handle, and other often wipe the touching areas.
– Stay hydrated – If you feel unwell to avoid dehydration, drink a lot of water.
– Beware of food – Eat freshly prepared food and avoid sharing utensils or drinks.

Norovirus case when increased

Norovirus cases are increasing. NHS England recently reported that more than 1,160 people are admitted to the daily hospital due to the virus, the highest number since the records started in 2012. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also confirmed a major outbreak earlier this year.

Cruises are fun and relaxed, but this is a reminder to take out outbreak precautions. If you are planning a trip, following basic hygiene practices can help you stay safe.
