The Oscar-winning musician spoke on depression and anxiety, saying most people suffer from mental health issues as they try to deal with a âvoidâ in their lives. The 57-year-old shared that people feel incomplete and donât understand how to overcome that feeling.
âNow we all have mental health problems, depression. Because I think there is a void in all of us,â Rahman said in an interview on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of India in Goa.
Rehman said investing energy in reading, writing and even listening to music can help a person suffering from mental health problems recover. âThat void can be filled by storytellers, by philosophy, by entertaining in a way where you donât even realize youâre taking drugs, and not just to satisfy your physical needs like violence and sex and things like that.â From. âThereâs more to it than all of those things,â he said.

The musician revealed that his mother taught him the importance of making a small difference in the lives of others, even if it means sharing a simple smile with them. âWhen I was young, I had suicidal thoughts, so my mother used to say, âWhen you live for others, you wonât have these thoughts.â This is one of the most beautiful advice I got from my mother. When you live for others, and you are not selfish, your life has a meaning, whether you are creating for someone, for something. Buying food for someone who canât afford it, or just making someone smile, those are the things that keep us going,â he explained.
