A new study says that high-intensity physical workouts may be more beneficial, especially for women. The study was published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society and was conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia in the US.
Studies have shown that more than moderate exercise, and engaging in vigorous physical activities such as jumping rope, swimming and cycling, can suppress appetite levels in healthy adults. Small studies suggest that women may be more sensitive to this reaction.

However, due to their demanding nature, one needs to follow proper warm-up and technique. This workout may also not be suitable for beginners or people with certain health problems.
Researchers say high-intensity exercise may be beneficial for women due to the effects of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. They noted that hunger levels are significantly reduced after high-intensity exercise, compared to moderate-intensity exercise or a control (no exercise).
Lead author Cara Anderson of the university said people felt ‘less hungry’ after high-intensity exercise compared to moderate-intensity exercise. The study involved eight men and six women to understand the effects of exercise intensity and sex on ghrelin levels and appetite in untrained humans.
The participants fasted overnight and then completed exercises of various intensity levels. This was determined by measurement of blood lactate, followed by self-reported measurement of hunger. The results showed that women had higher total ghrelin levels than men. However, the findings showed that only women demonstrated “significantly less acylated ghrelin (AG)” after intense exercise. AG and deacylated ghrelin (DAG) are two forms of the hormone ghrelin.
In addition to appetite, ghrelin is also known to influence energy balance, appetite, glucose homeostasis, immune function, sleep, and memory. Anderson explained that exercise can be compared to a medication, the ‘dosage’ of which must be adapted based on a person’s personal goals.
While studies suggest that high-intensity exercise can suppress appetite and aid weight loss, more research with longer follow-up periods is needed to confirm these preliminary observations.
