Top 10 causes of death in America
According to the CDC, heart disease and cancer are the top two causes of death in the United States in 2023. Experts say that even though there are no guarantees, making healthy choices can reduce your chances of being affected by these and other leading causes of death.

Many factors determine how long you can live – it depends on your habits, genetics and even lifestyle.
As the year ended, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a list of the top ten diseases that will cause the deaths of approximately 3.1 million US residents in 2023. The age-adjusted rate of death in 2023 was 750.5 deaths per 100,000 people, down about 6 percent from 798.8 in 2022.
Experts say there are many factors that determine how long you can live — it depends on your habits, genetics, and even lifestyle. The most common diseases that sick people suffer from around the world are cancerStroke and diabetes, which are also among the leading causes of death among Americans.
Overall, the top 10 leading causes of death in the US in 2023 remain the same as in 2022, according to the CDC — even though there were some changes in the ranks. Nine of the 10 leading causes saw a statistically significant decline in mortality, and only one cause saw an increase in the total number of deaths.
The CDC says the ten most common causes of death in the country accounted for about 71 percent of all deaths among U.S. residents in 2023.
heart attacks
Heart attacks remained the top cause of death for Americans in 2023, accounting for 22 percent of all deaths, followed by 21.4 percent in 2022.
cancer
There were nearly 5,000 more cancer deaths across the US in 2023 than in 2022, the only cause of death among the top 10 to see a year-over-year increase. There has been a statistically insignificant decline in cancer-related mortality.
accidents
At least 7.2 percent of American citizens died due to unintentional injuries caused by drug overdoses, car accidents, and falls.
cerebrovascular disease
cerebrovascular disease or CVD, is a group of conditions that affect the blood vessels and blood flow in the brain and spinal cord. These conditions cause brain damage by preventing brain cells from receiving enough oxygen. In the US, the condition will account for 5.3 percent of total deaths in 2023, up from 5 percent in 2022.
respiratory disease
Respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, emphysema and bronchitis are expected to cause 4.7 percent of deaths across the United States in 2023, and that number is significantly higher than in 2022.
alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s, a brain disorder that destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually the ability to perform daily tasks, is responsible for 3.7 percent of all people who will die in both 2022 and 2023.
diabetes
3.1 percent of all deaths in 2022 and 2023 were due to diabetes – even though the death rate is falling every year. In 2022 it was at number eight in the list.
kidney failure
While it was at number nine in 2022, in 2023 the disease contributed 1.8 percent of all deaths and the death rate declined significantly.
liver diseases
At least 1.7 percent of all deaths between that year and 2023 were caused by chronic liver diseases such as liver cancer and cirrhosis, and the death rate declined by about 6 percent between the years.
COVID-19
While it was fourth in 2022, deaths from COVID-19 in 2023 will account for 1.6 percent of all deaths among U.S. residents, compared to 5.7 percent of all deaths last year.
