USDA report Bird Flu confirmed in mice for the first time
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture has first confirmed the presence of H5N1 avian influenza in four black mice in California. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture has confirmed that H5N1 avian influenza has been detected in mice for the first time. According to the report, four black mice had a bird flu infection in California in January, where two recent poultry outbreaks were reported.
Officials have also confirmed the virus in mice found on the affected fields earlier.
The latest updates of the agency also included other infected mammals in places across the country, including a harbor seal in Massachusetts, a fox in North Dakota, a bobcat in the Washington state and a domestic cat in Oregon. According to officials, the infection in the cat is related to eating raw pet food which was contaminated by the virus.
These latest bird flu discovery comes as the country struggles to prevent the spread of excessive pathological viruses which have spread to most poultry farms and even some humans since last year. According to the data, since the H5N1 strain of bird flu was spreading in the US, about 148 million birds have been closed on chicken farms to prevent infection, causing a huge increase in egg prices.
