Victor Ambrose And Gary Ruvkun has been jointly awarded nobel prize 2024 In physiology and medicine for the discovery of micro RNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. The two scientists studied the 1 mm long roundworm, C. elegans.
“This year’s Medicine Award winners Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun studied a relatively simple 1 mm long roundworm, C. elegans. Despite its small size, C. elegans has several specialized cell types such as nerve and muscle cells that grow larger, are also found in more complex animals, making it a useful model for investigating how tissues develop and mature in multicellular organisms.” nobel prize The committee said in its ex-post.
The committee said, “The information stored within our chromosomes can be compared to an instruction manual for all the cells in our body. Every cell has the same number of chromosomes, so every cell has exactly the same set of genes and exactly the same set of instructions.” Same set.” In a press release.
“Yet, different types of cells, such as muscle and nerve cells, have very different characteristics. How do these differences arise? The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to select only the relevant instructions. This ensures that only the right set of genes is activated in each cell type,” it added.
About Victor Ambrose:
Victor Ambrose was born in 1953 in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. He received his PhD in 1979 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, where he also conducted postdoctoral research from 1979–1985.
