Located off the coast of Japan, Tashirojima is an island nicknamed ‘cat islandWonder why? Well, that’s because the number of cats on this island far exceeds the number of humans. Yes! Well, at that time, most of the land here was used to produce silkworms for the textile industry. Since local people feared that rats and mice would damage the cocoons, they decided to import some cats and free-release pet cats as a solution to the problem. Therefore, when cats were allowed to roam freely on the streets, they naturally reproduced more and eventually outnumbered humans on the island.
The residents here love cats very much. From feeding cats well to showering their love on them, Japanese residents also believe that cats bring them good luck and fortune. Not only this, there is a cat temple in the middle of the island known as Neko-jinja. Interestingly, there are no pet dogs on the island due to the large population of stray cats.
