Prince Frederick, the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nasau, is 22 years old. Frederick was suffering from a rare genetic condition, known as the Polyg Mitochondrial Disease, his father said in a statement. “Because POLG disease causes a wide range of symptoms and affects so many different organ systems, it is very difficult to diagnose and has no treatment, there is very little treatment,” Prince Robert has written. The Prince of Luxembourg Frederick died at the age of 22 due to serious health complications from a rare genetic condition, in which the cells of the body become devoid of any energy. Prince Frederick, who lives in Switzerland, died after a long battle with the Polyg Mitochondrial Disease earlier this month, his father Prince Robert announced in a statement shared on the Polug Foundation website.
“It’s with a very heavy heart that my wife and I want to inform you about our son’s death,” the statement began. In the statement, Robert recalled that Frederick had “called us to his room to talk to him once on 28 February.”
Frederick was detected by Polyg Mitochondrial Disease in 14, Robert explained in the statement, “When his symptoms were showing more clearly and when the progression of his disease became more intense.”
“Because poleg disease causes a wide range of symptoms and affects so many different organ systems, it is very difficult to diagnose and there is no treatment, there is very little treatment,” Robert wrote. The condition affects many organs, including the brain, muscles, and liver, and is usually caused by mutation in the gene.
What is the cause of polyg mitochondrial disease?
According to experts, the POLG disease, which robs the body’s energy cells, is caused by the effect on mitochondria working in your body. Mitochondria makes energy in your cells, and when they are not able to produce enough energy that your body needs, it affects how your organs function. It then leads to the laxity and failure of many progressively-folds.
Statistics says that 1 out of 5,000 people have Poles Mitochondrial Disease. It is common to receive a wrong diagnosis for mitochondrial diseases, which include number and type of symptoms and organ systems, so this number can be underestimated.
Symptoms and symptoms of poleg mitochondrial diseases
According to experts, symptoms of mitochondrial diseases vary depending on the type and location of affected cells. They can be mild to serious and join:
- Improvisation
- Muscle -muscle pain, or low muscle tone
- Vision and hearing loss
- Issues with developmental delay or cognitive development
- Diarrhea
- Unexplained vomiting
- Constant acid reflux
- Pull out
- Seizure
- Migraine
- Breathing issues
- Fainting
Symptoms of mitochondrial diseases may be present at birth, but they can also occur at any age. A healthcare provider usually detects symptoms affecting more than one organ or organ system at the same time. Symptoms of the same disease may vary from person to another among family members.
Is POLG a cure for diseases?
Doctors say that there is no cure for polug disease at this time. However, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improvement in quality of life. Some common remedies include:
- Anticonial medicines for seizures (although Valproate should be avoided)
- Pain medicine and muscle rest for rest
- Small, frequent food or a feeding tube may be helpful for nutritional support, and ketogenic diet is used to help control control sometimes.
- Physical therapy for a decline in motor skills and muscle strength
- Surgery or special glasses to correct dropping eyelids
- Speech therapy for speech
- Artificial ventilation for respiratory tube and/or respiratory failure
- CPAP or Bipap for Apnea
