Losing extra kilos is never easy, especially if you are a foodie. However, there are many hacks and tricks available on various social media platforms that can help in losing extra weight. Recently, nutritionist Alan Aragon took to his Instagram handle to reveal that drinking two glasses of water before meals can help you lose weight. During The Model Health Show’s podcast, Allen explained his trick of drinking water before meals, which is an effective strategy for increasing satiety and potentially aiding weight loss. But does it really work? check for!
What is the ‘water trick’ for weight loss?
Drinking plenty of water and keeping ourselves hydrated is essential for our body as it helps in maintaining overall health. In the podcast, Alan Aragon explains his ‘water trick’ which involves drinking two glasses of water before meals to help control appetite and reduce overall calorie intake. He told that the water you are drinking before eating will help you save calories.
“There’s something really interesting about Orgasm and what I call the ‘water trick’. You can actually drink plain water before each meal. After water preloading, you will eat much less. This is a good thing to do especially when you go out to eat dinner. Drink two large glasses of water when you sit down before bringing out fresh bread and butter: This will significantly reduce the amount of calories you burn eating,” he said in the episode.
Drinking water while eating – is it safe?
We all have heard from our elders that one should drink enough water, but is it safe to drink water with meals and is it advisable? According to Allen, it is. “I always get this question: Doesn’t drinking water with meals weaken the digestive enzymes, and then you won’t be able to digest the food properly? In fact there is no evidence of this. I understand what people are thinking, but when you look at a population that eats a lot of soup, they can’t get as much water in with their food, and they’re digesting the food properly. So, I don’t think people need to worry about it if they decide to use the ‘water trick’ to put a top-speed limiter on a cheesecake after their main meal,” he said.
A study published in Obesity found that participants who drank about 500 ml of water before each meal lost more weight over 12 weeks than those who did not. Water helps in maintaining digestion and overall health. Therefore, it is generally recommended to drink 2.5-3 ml of water daily as it helps us achieve satiety and keep our calorie intake under control because at times we are just thirsty but we think we are hungry. Drinking water before meals can help you distinguish between true hunger and dehydration. This can prevent unnecessary calorie intake when you need hydration.
