Who issues immediate warnings: Encephalitis is a global health emergency (image credit: ISTOCK)
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Encephalitis International have issued a new warning about encephalitis, a serious brain condition that is becoming a growing global health concern. He has issued a technical brief, in which there is immediate need for better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
What is encephalitis?
Encephalitis is a condition where the brain becomes inflamed due to infection or autoimmune reactions. This can lead to serious complications such as brain damage, memory loss and even permanent disability. While many people are unaware of encephalitis, it can affect people of all ages and backgrounds.
There are two main types of encephalitis:
– Infectious encephalitis is caused by viruses such as Japanese encephalitis and scrub typhus, which are common in India.
– Autoimmune encephalitis occurs when the body’s immune system accidentally attacks the brain.
Why is encephalitis a growing anxiety? Encephalitis International Chief Executive Officer Dr. Awa Easton emphasized the importance of immediate action. “Encephalitis is a growing global threat. Without immediate attention and investment, we will see more unnecessary death and disability than the situation, ”he said.
A 2024 survey found 1,548 cases of Japanese encephalitis in 24 Indian states and center areas. Many cases become inaccessible, especially in countries with minimum-to-minus-income countries where healthcare systems struggle to provide adequate care.
From WHO’s brain health unit, Dr. Tarun Dua said, “WHO encephalitis technology aims to focus on existing intervals in encephalitis, prevention strategies and diagnosis, treatment and care.”
Major conclusions from WHO report
The WHO report explains several important issues:
– Encephalitis is recognized despite significant deaths and causing disability.
– Climate change, urbanization and global trade contribute to the spread of infectious encephalitis.
– In many cases, especially in LMICS, due to poor data collection and lack of awareness, go unknowingly.
– Strong monitoring and vaccination programs are required to control the disease.
– Public awareness campaigns can help reduce deaths and long -term disabilities.
Global response
To help resolve these challenges, Encephalitis International has introduced “Countdown to Change” appeal with the aim of raising 50,000 pounds by 22 February, 2025. Funds will be used to improve diagnosis, treatment access and subsequent support for patients around the world.
Dr. “The recognition of encephalitis as global health danger is an important moment,” Easton said. “We should act decisively to improve prevention, diagnosis and care for the affected people.”
Symptoms
Despite affecting three people every minute globally, 77 percent of the population is unaware of encephalitis. Lack of awareness often delays diagnosis and treatment.
Common symptoms include:
– Confusion and changed consciousness
– Memory loss and psychiatric symptoms
– Change and seizure behavior
Without timely treatment, people survived by encephalitis may have to face long -term effects such as cognitive loss, epilepsy and chronic fatigue.
