Why does running outside feel more difficult than running on a treadmill?

Running not only helps in weight loss but also keeps you fit and healthy. However, it is believed that most people – despite loving running outside, find it much harder than running on a treadmill, which can be boring and monotonous. Read on to find out why this might happen.
Why does running outside feel more difficult than running on a treadmill?

Although running inside and outside has its own advantages and disadvantages, it cannot be denied that running outside is more difficult.

If you ask any runner what they prefer – running outside or running on a treadmill, most say they prefer to do it outside, but they prefer the latter because it doesn’t tire them out. While many running purists can’t stand the monotony of a treadmill, they find the machine better suited for structured workouts and easier than outdoor ones.
Although running inside and outside has its own advantages and disadvantages, it cannot be denied that running outside is more difficult.

What does it mean to run out?

facing challenging weather

People who run outside have to face extreme weather conditions – it will either be very hot, cold, or rainy. According to experts, if you want to run outside, it is better to either learn to work with nature or adapt to it. Additionally, running in extreme cold or heat also increases your risk of dehydration. If you are not wearing proper clothing and hydrating yourself it can be a life threatening situation.
Running at night also increases the risk of injury and can be dangerous. However, according to experts, if you choose to run at night, make sure you wear reflective clothing and a headlamp to help you see. Tell a friend your route and when you expect to get home. Even better, find a running buddy.

Can’t control out pace, or predictability

Running on a treadmill will mean that you can set the speed and inclination, which controls the difficulty of the running. However, if you’re running with a specific time or pace in mind, it’s much easier to guarantee that result on a treadmill.

Which is the better way to lose weight?

Experts say the best exercise for weight loss is one you enjoy. So, whether you prefer treadmill or outdoor running, regular aerobic exercise like running will burn calories to make up for the calorie deficit. Studies have shown that running a few times per week increases fat loss. Interestingly, even though most participants experienced significant weight loss, their muscle mass also increased.
You can lose weight by running at low to moderate intensity, also known as steady-state running. This means running at a constant speed at the same intensity for a set period of time.
Alternatively, you can also use high-intensity interval training which involves short, 30-90-second bouts of intense exercise such as running, followed by equal periods of rest, such as slow running or walking. Luckily, you can do both HIIT and steady-state running on or outside a treadmill. However, if you are running outside, make sure to run on level ground to avoid injury.
In addition to weight loss, running of all types can provide you with many health benefits, such as reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, depression, and anxiety.
However, if you’re new to running, be sure to talk to a healthcare provider first to make sure it’s right for you. It’s always best to start slow and progress gradually.
