Why Kolkata’s yellow taxis will always be a part of the city’s image for commuters
Despite never having been to Kolkata, I find myself joining the people here in mourning the closure of the city’s old yellow taxis.

Why Kolkata’s yellow taxis will always be a part of the city’s image for commuters
I clearly remember Nana Patekar’s character in Taxi No. 9211; The source of his happiness and sorrow was that taxi. His journey, with changes, was embodied by Mehmood, who played a spirited driver in Sadhu Aur Shaitan. And I remember my father talking about Guru Dutt’s onscreen persona Kalu, who drove a black yellow car on the streets of Bombay in Aar Paar. Our collective nostalgic obsession has been captured so perfectly by Bollywood, that even on my first visit to Maximum City, riding Kaali Peeli was at the top of my list. Cliché, I know, but it’s cliché for a reason.

Although I have never been to Kolkata, the ‘ride in the yellow taxi’ has always been on the top of my city list, followed by a visit to Kumartuli and a sunset boat ride on the Hooghly under the iconic Howrah Bridge. For decades, Kolkata’s bright yellow Ambassador taxis have been synonymous with the vibrancy of the city. An essential part of the city for both locals and travelers, these iconic vehicles epitomize the poetic charm of Kolkata. Despite never having seen the city, my heart goes out to its people as they mourn the loss of the city’s old yellow taxis.

Yellow taxis originated in the mid-20th century, when the Hindustan Ambassador, modeled after the British Morris Oxford, was introduced in India. Its sturdy build, spacious interiors and regal design soon made it the car of choice for government officials and, eventually, Kolkata’s taxi fleet. Over time, the combination of yellow and blue became synonymous with the city streets, as ubiquitous as Howrah Bridge or the aroma of roadside puchkas. For a long time, this was the only way to get around the city!

Yes, it is appropriate to phase out cars that have crossed their 15-year service limit. But it’s hard not to be nostalgic about the slightly worn leather seats, the roar of the engine and the gruff but oddly charming behavior of the taxi drivers, who I’ve heard are particularly known for their afternoon relaxation. Are. Through yellow caband its trams, the city has held fast to its traditions – both of which are now paving the way for modernity.
Even today, when I think of Kolkata, the first thing that comes to mind are yellow taxis. And it probably always will be.
