After receiving the Marketing Authority from India’s Drug Regulatory-Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), the US-based pharmaceutical giant Elli Lily, popular-diabetes and obesity in India, has been launched in India.

Mounjaro is used for type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus and weight management. The drug is now available in a single -graded vial which works by activating two major hormones, GIPs and GLP -1, which helps in controlling blood sugar levels and appetite.

It is used with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Precription is recommended for drugs:

• Adult with obesity (30 or more BMI)
• Adults who are overweight (27 or more BMI) and other health problems related to weight
• Adults with type 2 diabetes to help manage blood sugar

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are growing rapidly in India, causing great health challenges. Lily India President Vinslo Tucker said that the company is working with the government and the healthcare industry to increase awareness and improve treatment options.

He said, “Our goal is to help people with obesity and diabetes.

In July 2024, under India’s top drug regulator, a theme expert committee gave a green light to Lily’s Tirzepetide, which was an active ingredient in its popular drugs and active ingredients in the zipbound.

Clinical tests show strong results

Mounjaro was tested in two major global studies:

Surmount-1 (for weight loss): In a study of 2,539 adults with obesity or additional weight, people who had taken silence with diet and exercise had reduced significant weight in 72 weeks.

In the highest dose (15 mg), he lost an average 21.8 kg
In the lowest dose (5 mg), he lost an average 15.4 kg

In contrast, people lost only 3.2 kg on a placebo (dummy treatment).

Outrage (for diabetes control): In this study, Maunjaro was tested with other diabetes drugs. The results showed that it helped in the level of low blood sugar (A1C) up to 2.4% in 40 weeks.

Mounjaro is once a week’s prescription drug that helps to regulate blood sugar, insulin and appetite.

Diabetes and obesity in India

About 101 million people in India live with diabetes, and about half of them do not have proper blood sugar control. Obesity is an important risk factor for diabetes and is associated with many health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and sleep disorders.

In 2023, around 100 million Indians were affected by obesity.
