Thackeray has a history of angioplasty and may undergo angiography tests to identify blockages in the arteries of his heart
Uddhav Thackeray admitted to hospital: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray was admitted to Reliance Hospital in Mumbai on Monday for a health checkup. News reports state that Thackeray has a history of angioplasty and is currently undergoing tests to identify blockages in his heart arteries.
The 64-year-old politician had undergone angioplasty in 2012 after three of his arteries were completely blocked. Doctors then inserted eight stents to remove multiple blockages in the three main arteries of his heart.
what is angioplasty,
Angioplasty, also called coronary angioplasty, is a procedure to open clogged blood vessels in the heart. It helps treat the vessels – called coronary arteries – that supply blood to the heart muscle. A small balloon on a narrow tube called a catheter is used to widen the clogged artery and improve blood flow.
Also known as balloon angioplasty – this procedure is minimally invasive for tight spots in the arteries where plaque has made the space inside the artery too narrow or blocks it.
According to experts, people who have suffered coronary artery disease or a heart attack may require coronary angioplasty.
How is angioplasty done?,
To conduct the procedure seamlessly, the doctor will insert a catheter or tube through your skin into a blood vessel in your wrist or groin. They use medicine to make you not feel that the tube has gone into your body. The catheter is then led through your blood vessels to your blocked or narrowed coronary artery.
After reaching the problem area, the doctor will insert a wire and another catheter with a small balloon at the end. Once the balloon is inflated, it moves the plaque out of the way and to the side of the artery wall, clearing the way for blood to enter. Your narrow coronary artery is like a crowded subway car whose aisle is blocked by people.
Then a small stent – a hollow scaffold made of metal – is inserted inside your artery long after the angioplasty has been done. Many stents have a coating of medicine that helps prevent your artery from becoming too narrow again.
What is Benefits of Angioplasty,
According to experts, the benefits of undergoing angioplasty include:
- It has less risk and lower cost than a surgical procedure
- It causes a wound only where the catheter is inserted.
- The doctor may place a stent during your angioplasty
risk
Even though it is the most common procedure and considered safe, some risk factors associated with angioplasty include:
- reaction to dye
- heart attack
- abnormal heart rhythm
- stroke
- blood vessel or kidney damage
- blood clots
- chest pain
- is bleeding
- frequent interruptions
According to doctors, the risk of angioplasty complications is higher for older adults or people who have multiple blocked arteries, kidney disease or heart failure.
